I have no dependents, but I could add together dependents to my policy (if I had them) and if I paid for it.

Same here and from what I've heard it's ridiculously expensive.

Dependents are fully covered, no price. Definitely made an impact on my decision.

My grad program offered insurance for students, with the option of enrolling spouses and kids (I remember this was quite expensive, though). Information technology was good insurance, IMO - we had to use the campus clinic for primary care and I always had good experiences, and they didn't hesitate to refer to specialists if necessary. It worked merely fine for me for 7 years, which included regular checkups, prescriptions, and an ER visit.

USC used to offer information technology until about a year or ii ago. If kinda got axed when ACA went into consequence. I think they used it as an excuse to cut costs

I remember that is pretty much what is happening at Berkeley

This was probably good on the student end, actually. Adverse choice drives up toll of the plan and information technology ends upwards cheaper to get coverage, peradventure subsidized, on the marketplace. And offering insurance to dependents may make them ineligible for subsidy.

I tin add together dependants, and actually take my GF on my plan. Per month it'due south a $45 deduction for me, $112 for the GF.

We all the same have dependent coverage, just without the grad student subsidy.

This yr, prices went up and many students migrated to Obamacare/ACA. With the low grad stipends, most qualified for subsidies and receive ameliorate coverage for lower toll.
Damn, I should look into that. Are the subsidies just based on income or are there discounts for grad students every bit well?

At my school, yous're automatically enrolled in health insurance if you lot're a didactics assistant or enquiry assistant. Dependents can be enrolled for a monthly fee. Non sure how expensive that is since it doesn't apply to me.

My school does. Only nosotros have to pay for it. The school will just encompass our costs.

Masters pupil and then I don't become health care.
Thankfully they pay us so piddling I become information technology from the state for free since I'm so close to the poverty level!

UW-Madison offered health insurance (a very good one btw) to my dependents (wife and two kids) when I was in grad school. I had to pay a bit extra money per month but nix serious, $50 or so.

Generally, if they aren't paying much of their share into dependent insurance, it doesn't make sense to offer information technology. That is, if the premium toll for the student was already high and intentionally so, it would be driven up by adverse selection. In the post-ACA environment, in that location is no purpose to continuing to offering it because of guaranteed issue on the individual market place and the fact that offering it, even at 0% subsidy, may make dependents ineligible for premium subsidies under the ACA. Then continuing to offer it is pointless considering it's more expensive than the private only going out on the marketplace and may make the individual ineligible for subsidies on the marketplace.

My university covers mine 100%, and dependents can be added for a fee. Just the university also provides on campus child care, and so I'chiliad sure that's huge help to parents. (I don't have whatever kids).

My schoolhouse just dropped dependents this adjacent financial yr.

In Germany nosotros take public health intendance insurance. You can take every bit many dependents as y'all want costless of charge, independent from the school y'all go to.
Costs 160€/month for PhD students or unemployed people, if they have no additional income.
